The Department of Homoeopathic Pharmacy is an integral part of the academic and clinical framework of the Government Homoeopathic Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. It plays a vital role in the first-year Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) curriculum. The department is committed to providing comprehensive education, practical training, and research-oriented learning in the field of Homoeopathic Pharmacy. It is dedicated to imparting in-depth knowledge of the principles, preparation, preservation, dispensing, and standardization of homoeopathic medicines. The teaching approach emphasizes integrating classical homoeopathic concepts with evolving pharmaceutical and regulatory standards.

Vision

To become a centre of excellence in Homoeopathic Pharmacy education and research by blending traditional knowledge with scientific advancements—nurturing students with sound knowledge, ethical values, and practical skills, while promoting a strong foundation for academic and clinical research in Homoeopathic pharmaceuticals.

Objectives

To impart in-depth knowledge of the fundamental principles and practices of Homoeopathic Pharmacy.

To train students in the accurate identification, preparation, standardization, and dispensing of homoeopathic medicines.

To ensure familiarity with various pharmacopoeias, drug laws, and quality standards relevant to homoeopathy.

To promote awareness of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and adherence to Pharmacopoeial standards.

To cultivate precision, ethics, and a sense of responsibility in handling and preparing homoeopathic drugs.

To encourage research and innovation in the development and evaluation of homoeopathic medicinal products.

Academic Activities

The department offers both theoretical and practical training in Homoeopathic Pharmacy as per the curriculum prescribed by the National Commission for Homoeopathy (NCH).

Theory and Practical Classes are conducted for first-year BHMS students, covering key areas such as sources of drugs, drug dynamization, posology, pharmacopoeial standards, and various pharmaceutical techniques.

Students receive hands-on training in the preparation of mother tinctures, triturations, dilutions, and potencies using standard methods, with practical exposure in both the college pharmacy and laboratory settings.

Regular demonstrations, assignments, and internal assessments are conducted to ensure academic excellence and continuous learning.

The department encourages student projects involving simple drug preparation and identification, fostering curiosity and practical understanding.

A Certificate Course in Homoeopathic Pharmacy is also conducted as a short-term skill development programme aimed at training pharmacists working in homoeopathic dispensaries under the Government of Kerala.

Infrastructure

Pharmacy Laboratory :

Well-equipped with instruments, glassware, and other facilities required for the preparation, compounding, and analysis of homoeopathic medicines.

Raw Drug Museum :

A comprehensive collection of source materials from the plant, animal, and mineral kingdoms, along with pharmaceutical specimens as per the Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia.

Dispensing unit :

Fully functional units for training students in the standard procedures of dispensing of medicines.

Demonstration Room :

A dedicated space for hands-on teaching and demonstration of pharmaceutical techniques.

Reference Library :

Contains a range of textbooks and Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeias to support academic and research activities.
